A

Fire door assemblies have fire rating durations expressed as 20,30,45,60,90, and 180 minutes.May also be expressed as 1/3, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/2, 3 hours. Fire door assemblies are comprised of components that may have different fire rating durations. The fire rating of the overall assembly will be based on the component with the lowest fire rating duration. If the door is rated 60 minutes, the frame rated 90 minutes and the lock is rated 20 min the overall fire rating of the assembly will be 20 min.

Author Note: This is a key area because it provides info on what preparations are permitted on a fire door assembly at the job site and what preparations must be performed under an inspection service procedure, with label service by a listing and labeling agency acceptable to the AHJ. As a Fire Door Inspector, field modifications will be one of the key areas you need to focus on during your inspections. Knowing what modificatios are need to be completed where the door is labeled (under label service) is very important.

4.1.3.1 (Appurtenances)

A

Preparations of fire door assemblies for locks, latches, hinges, remotely operated or remotely monitored hardware, concealed closures, glass lights, vision panels, lovers, astragals, and split astragals, and the application of plant-ons and laminated overlays, shall be performed in accordance with the manufacturer’s inspect service procedure and under label service.

Surface applied hardware shall be applied to the door or frame without removing material other than drilling round holes to accommodate cylinders, spindles, similar operational elements, and through bolts in doors.

A

Informational signs shall be permitted to be installed on the surface of fire doors in accordance with 4.1.4.1 through 4.1.4.4 or in accordance with the manufacturer’s listing.
