Why did so many of the Rich rebuild + remodel their homes?
To keep up with fashion + often to entertain the Queen when she visited on Royal Progresses
Describe some building styles used by the Rich
1.) Houses were symmetrical in an ‘E’ or ‘H’ shape
2.) Large glazed windows, brick chimneys, fireplaces, tapestry lined walls
What was a long gallery + what was it typically used for?
It was a gallery that ran the whole length of the house. It had windows along one side, with the other lined with family portraits and chests. It was used for exercise, dancing, playing games
What did the rich normally wear?
Men: Doublet, breeches, stockings, stiffened ruff
Women: Farthingale, gown, stockings, ruff, jewellery
What was the rich education like?
Sons of wealthy nobles were tutored at home. They were taught lots of languages, social etiquette, hunting + dancing. Girls were taught by a governess on how to run a household
What were the Poor Homes like?
Lived in much smaller homes (e.g poor man’s cottage that had 1 room c likely shared with animals) There was little furniture, with straw/mud walls
What was work like for the poor?
Tenant farmer + labourer worked from 5-5pm. Normally ate veg stew for dinner as meat was expensive. Life expectancy was low, as many died from diseases like smallpox
What did the poor usually wear?
Tenant farmer/labourer: doublet, leather breeches + felt cap
Women: petticoat, mantle, net/cap
What was the poor education like?
Usually some were uneducated, but some taught basic reading + writing in parish schools
What were Gentry homes like?
Copied the trend amongst richer nobles to modernise their homes. Their houses usually built of stone, brick or half timber, had a minimum of 8 rooms + servants quarters
