Fresnel
A soft-edged spotlight that produces a wide, even beam of light; used for general washes.
Profile (or Ellipsoidal) light
A spotlight with a hard edge that can be shaped with shutters; ideal for focused lighting.
Par Can
A basic, fixed-focus light that produces a strong beam; often used for punchy, coloured effects.
gobo
A thin metal or glass stencil placed inside a profile light to project shapes or patterns.
Gel
A coloured plastic filter placed in front of a light to change its colour.
Barn door
Adjustable flaps attached to the front of a Fresnel or Par Can to shape and control the beam.
Dimmer
An electrical device that controls the intensity of a light.
Stage Wash
A broad, even coverage of light over a large area of the stage.
Backlight
Light that comes from behind the subject to separate them from the background.
Downlight
Light that shines directly from above the subject to create dramatic shadows.
Spotlight
A powerful, focused beam of light often used to highlight a specific actor or object.
Cross lighting
Lighting a subject from two opposite angles to reduce shadows and give depth.
Lighting rigging
The framework and layout of all lights and their positions in a venue.
Fade (action)
A gradual increase or decrease in light intensity.
Snap
A sudden change in lighting, either turning on/off or jumping to a new cue.
Cue Stack
A programmed sequence of lighting cues that run in order during the show.
Plotting (presentation)
The process of creating and recording lighting cues in the software.
Floodlight
A lantern that provides a broad, unfocused light over a large area.
