Lighting in film
Lighter and darker areas in the frame help create the overall composition of each shot and guide our attention to certain objects and actions
Cast shadow
Dark area projected onto a surface by an object or subject blocking light
Attached shadow
Shadow that appears directly on the surface of an object itself, defining its form and revealing its contours
4 features of lighting
Quality, direction, source, colour
Quality
Relative intensity of light
Hard lighting
Creates sharp edges and defined shadows
Soft lighting
Diffused and attemps to reduce shadows
Direction
Path of light from its source to lit character/object
Frontal lighting
Back lighting
Top lighting
Under lighting
3 point lighting
combination key, fill and back light
High key lighting
Reduces contrast between lighter and darker parts of image (uses 3 point combonation)
Low key lighting
Increses contrast between lighter and darker parts of image (no fill light)
Source of light
Origin of light used to illuminate shit
Often does not coincide with practical lighting presented in film
Colour
Selection of colour can be realistic or unrealistic
If latter, choice if often used for expressive purposes

Low key lighting used to create aesthetic of uncertainty
Significant emphasis on shadows
Often unmotivated light sources
