define validity and give an example
-Validity refers to the test measuring what is claimed to measure.
-it is difficult to justify whether the handgrip dynamometer test measures whole body strength rather than just lower arm and hand strength.
define reliability
Reliability requires that the test should produce similar results each time the test is taken unless there has been a significant change in the fitness level of the participant.
Reasons to carry out fitness tests
-To identify the specific strengths or weaknesses of an individual’s performance
-Analysis of current fitness proficiency could be compared against other sports people within the same category and can be used to inform or compare to national averages
-Knowledge of fitness strengths and weaknesses could motivate performers and help with identifying specific fitness targets for personal goal-setting
-Allocating time to carry out fitness tests within a training programme helps to provide variety to sustain enthusiasm in the participant
Limitations of fitness tests
-Some fitness tests are too specific such as the handgrip dynamometer test
-Some tests do not replicate real sporting movements or challenges and are therefore too generic
-Fitness tests do not replicate the competitive environment of sport
-Many maximal tests such as the 60 second press up test require a person to be fully motivated or they drop out before achieving their true score
-If a fitness test is measuring a fitness component which is not a maximal reading, then it will affect the reliability
