Limiting Factors Flashcards
(6 cards)
What are limiting factors
Environmental factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis
What is the rate of photosynthesis limited by
Light intensity
Temperature
Level of carbon dioxide
Amount of chlorophyll
Describe light as a limiting factor
If there’s plenty, rate of photosynthesis increases (stops if there’s little-no light)
The brighter it is, the faster the rate
On a graph:
- 1. Rate increases as intensity increases
- 2. Rate won’t change due to other limiting factors, graph plateaus
Describe temperature as a limiting factor
Affects chemical reactions
As temp rises, rate increases
Enzymes denatured once temperature is too high, rate will fall
On a graph:
Rate Increases as temp increases
Reaches optimum point
Drops after enzymes denatured
Describe carbon dioxide concentration as a limiting factor
It’s needed to make glucose
Small amount in atmosphere limits rate
Increased causes increased rate
On a graph:
1. Rate increases as conc increases
2. Plateaus due to other limiting factors
Describe chlorophyll levels in leaves as a limiting factor
If there’s less Chloropyll less photosynthesis will take place
