Lincoln was not so popular, he made it clear in these debates that he was not an abolitionist or a believer in equality, just that slavery was not the way forward, Douglas was also not pro slave

showing republican popularity, could be that they won because the Democrats were divided between North and South, including Douglas’ votes 69% voted for anti-slavery candidates, showing that slavery was not as popular as suggested
