International Phonetic Alphabet
Vowel height
The height of your tongue as you say a vowel; for example, e has more vowel height than a
Monophthong
A vowel phoneme consisting of one distinct articulatory element; a vowel sound.
Articulators
Structures used to produce sounds of speech; all parts of the vocal apparatus which are involved in speech production
Phonetics
The study of speech sounds in a language
Vocal-tract
Consisting of the larynx, pharynx, and the oral and nasal cavities
Frequency
The number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time
Place of articulation
The location of the constriction in the vocal tract in production of a consonant; the point of contact, where an obstruction occurs in the vocal tract between an active, moving articulator (typically one part of the tongue) and a passive articulator (typically one part of the roof of the mouth).
Affricate
A stoppage of the air-flow, followed by a prolonged release with only a narrow opening causing audible friction
Plosive
A manner of articulation; burst of air at the moment of release.
Fricative
The airflow is unobstructed. When the air passes through this slight opening.
Stops
Stop of airflows.
diphthongs
Is a vowel sounds in which there is a change in sound quality within a single syllable
Bilabial
To make the sound you must use both lips
Alveolar
A sound made by putting the tip of the tongue on or near the alveolar ridge - the bit of the roof of the mouth behind the teeth.
Glottal
Airstream is blocked at the glottis, think gulping sound (g)
Velar
Consonants are articulated with the back part of the tongue against the soft palate (k).
Palatal
the tongue is raised toward the hard palate.
Labio-dentals
Place of articulation; lower lip and upper teeth
Inter-dental
Sounds produced by the tongue immediately behind the upper front teeth or even protruding between upper and lower front teeth.
