Triglycerides are formed as a result of condensation reaction between the hydroxyl groups of 1 glycerol and carboxyl groups of 3 fatty acids.

Fatty acids are insoluble in water due to the long hydrophobic hydrocarbon chains which do not form hydrogen bonds with water

Glycerol is soluble in water due to presence of hydrophilic hydroxyl groups which forms hydrogen bonds with water
Why are triglycerides a huge energy source?
compared to carbohydrates, triglycerides has a greater carbon to hydrogen ratio which yields a greater amount of carbohydrates per gram when oxidized during aerobic respiration hence it is a compact energy store
What are phospholipds made of ?
phospholipids consist of 2 fatty acids and 1 phosphate group covalently bonded to 1 glycerol molecule
What is a phospholipid molecule made of?
A phospholipid molecule has a hydrophilic phosphate head and two hydrophobic hydrocarbon tails of fatty acids.
What is the action of phospholipids in cell membranes?
Phospholipids form a bilayer in cell membranes due to the amphipathic nature of the phospholipid molecule. The hydrophilic phosphate head faces outwards to interact with the aqueous medium and external environment and cytoplasm via hydrogen and ionic bonds. Whereas the hydrophobic core of a membrane is formed from the hydrophobic hydrocarbon tails which interact via hydrophobic interaction.
