Lipids Flashcards
Lipids characteristics
Macromolecules - not polymers
Non polar
Insoluble in we’re
Dissolve in organic solvents
Hydrophobic
How triglyceride and phospholipid made
Triglyceride - glycerol molecule and 3 fatty acids
Phospholipids - phosphate group, glycerol molecule, 2 fatty acids
What bond forms in triglyceride and phospholipid
Ester bonds
What are R groups
Fatty acids which can be unsaturated or saturated
Saturated fatty acids
Hydrocarbon chain only has single bonds between carbon atoms
Unsaturated fatty acids
Chain has 1 or more double bonds between carbon
Triglcycerides can
Transfer energy
Act as metabolic water source
Won’t affect water potential and osmosis
Many affect without affecting mass
Components of phosphlipid
Hydrophilic head - negative charge attracts to water and repels other fats
Hydrophobic tail - no charge and repels water
Cholesterol made of
Sterols have four carbon rings and hydroxyl group at one end
Hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions
What does cholesterol do to membrane fluidity
Decrease fluidity when hot
Increase fluidity when cold
