Fantasy
A story that contains an unreal world or unreal characters
Ex. Lord of the Rings
Farce
Genre and type of comedy that makes use of highly exaggerated and funny situations aimed at entertaining the audience
Figurative Language
A way of saying one thing but meaning another
Ex. metaphors, similes, personification
Fixed forms
A poem may be categorized by the pattern of its lines, meter, rhythm, or stanzas
Ex. haiku, sonnet
Flat character
A character in fiction that is uncomplicated and doesn’t change
Ex. Cinderella, Mr. Collins
Foil
A character that serves to highlight one or more attributes of another character, often the protagonist, by providing contrast
Ex. Watson (to Sherlock Holmes)
Frame device
A story within a story
Ex. The Princess Bride
Free verse
Poetry that has no meter, no rhyme
Ex. sounds like a conversation
Genre
A category of literary composition

Homily
Literally “sermon”, or any serious talk, speech, or lecture providing moral or spiritual advice

Hubris
Extreme pride and arrogance shown by a character that ultimately brings about their downfall
Ex. Lucifer, Gaston
Idiom
A set expression or phrase comprising two or more words, typically specific to a culture
Ex. Raining cats and dogs, stirring up a hornet’ nest, head over heels
In media res
Describes how a narrative begins, not at the beginning of a story, but somewhere in the middle - usually at some crucial point in the action
Ex. Dante’s Inferno begins in the forest
Invective
A direct verbal assault, a denunciation
Ex. Lily-livered boy, poisonous bunch-backed toad, thou art a boil, a plague sore
Jargon
The use of specific phrases and words by writers in a particular situation, profession, or trade

Juxtaposition
When one theme or idea or person is paralleled to another for effect
Ex. a man walking a well-groomed dog versus a rough dog with a spiked collar
Legend
A sort of narrative that lies somewhere between myth and historical act, and which, as a rule, is about a particular figure or person
Ex. King Arthur and knights of the round table
Lyric
A poem that does not tell a story but expresses the personal feelings or thoughts of the speaker (1st person)

Malapropism
The act of using an incorrect word in place of one that is similar is pronunciation
Ex. Having one wife is called monotony. Or I want to be apart of the team. Or he had to have surgery on the cartridge in his knee.
Maxim
A maxim is a simple and memorable line, quote, or rule for taking action and leading a good life. Much like a proverb or aphorism
Ex. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. A little learning is a dangerous thing.
