Alliteration
Repetition of sounds in a sequence of words, generally initial consonant sounds
Aside
Character expresses true thoughts to the audience
Monologue
Character rambles with other characters present and listening
Solioquy
Character speaks at length and either no one else is on stage, or it is staged that characters is alone and sharing thoughts with audience
Comedy
In Shakespeare, usually end with weddings/marriage- “lighter side” and experiences of “ordinary people”
Malapropism
Substitution for the correct word of a word similar in sound but different in meaning (form of catachresis)
Situational irony
Whatever you expect to happen, the opposite happens
Verbal irony
Character says something but clearly means the opposite
Dramatic irony
Audience knows something characters don’t
Turning point
Crisis- moment when the protagonist’s lot will change decisively
Hyperbole
Overstatement
Metaphor
Compares two things without like or as
Simile
Compares two things with like or as
Setting
Combination of place, time, social milieu during the literary work
Theme
Statement the text makes about a subject
Auditory imagery
Appeals to the sound
