Plot
The chain of events in a story
Exposition
The start of a story, which provides background information about the characters and setting
Rising action
The point at which the story takes off and begins to build toward a climax (is caused by a complication)
Falling action
The events after the climax when the story begins to wrap up
Resolution
The ending of a story; usually the conflict is resolved
Conflict
A struggle between two or more forces
Man vs. man
A struggle between two more more characters
Man vs. nature
A struggle between a character and a force of nature
Man vs. society
A struggle between a character and his/her society
Man vs. self
An internal struggle that occurs in a character’s own mind
Setting
The time, place, and circumstances of a story
Characterization
The way the author develops the personalities of his/her characters
Flat character
Isn’t well developed; reader only knows one or two of the traits
Round
A round character has many traits and feels like a real person…
Static
A character that doesn’t grow/change during the story
Dynamic
Undergo growth and change during a story
Protagonist
The main character, who usually starts the action
Antagonist
The character who works against the protagonist (sometimes a force rather than a character)
Stock
An instantly recognizable, stereotypical character e.g. dumb jock, villain
Theme
The message the author is trying to get across to readers
Point of view
The type of narrator that is used to tell the story
First-person narrator
A character tells the story; the narrator says “I” and the narrator can only tell what the character hears, sees, and experiences.
Third-person narrator
An outside narrator; they say “he” and “she”
Second-person narrator
A rarely used type of narration that uses the pronoun “you” as in the reader is the main character
