Alliteration
The repetition of initial sounds in words.
Allusion
A reference to a famous person, place, or event. (Deception of someone)
Apostrophe
Character addressing an absent person, object or area as if it were present (talking to nothing).
Dramatic Irony
When the reader/audience knows more than the character.
Foil
Similar situation but react differently
Hyperbole
An extreme exaggeration.
Metaphor
A direct comparison between two or more things; does not use “like” or “as”.
Anagnorisis / Recognition
A moment in the play when a character self-understands or discovers
Aside
A short quick comment said by a character, in the midst of other characters on stage, not heard by them
Monologue
A long, uninterrupted speech delivered by a character while in the midst of other characters on stage, and heard by them.
Peripeteia / Reversal
Reversal of fortune to the protagonist-from good to bad, or bad to good)
Soliloquy
A long, uninterrupted speech delivered by a character who is alone on stage and thinking thoughts out loud.
