The main character in a story
Protagonist
Character who opposes the protagonist
Antagonist
A character that doesn’t change from the beginning of the story to the end
Static Character
A character who grows, learns, or changes as a result of the story’s action
Dynamic Character
A character who demonstrates some complexity and who develops or changes in the course of a story
Round Character
A character who embodies a single quality and who does not develop in the course of a story
Flat Character
The perspective from which the reader is reading the story
Point of View
The narrator is a character in the story. (I and Me)
1st Person POV
Narrator uses he, she, or it to convey the thoughts and feelings of one character only
3rd Person limited POV
A method of storytelling in which the narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all the characters
3rd Person omniscient POV
A struggle between opposing forces
Conflict
A struggle between a character and an outside force
External Conflict
A struggle between opposing needs, desires, or emotions within a single character
Internal Conflict
The sequence of events in a story
Plot
A narrative device, often used at the beginning of a work that provides necessary background info
Exposition
Events leading up to the climax
Rising Action
The turning point of the story
Climax
Events after the climax, leading to the resolution
Falling Action
End of the story where all loose ends are tied up
Resolution
A narrative device that hints at upcoming events, often builds tension, suspense, or anxiety
Foreshadowing
A device in literature where an object represents an idea
Symbolism
A story that conveys a lesson
