Simile

Personification
giving human qualities to nonhuman things
Example: “The wind whispered through the streets”
Irony
when something happens that is unexpected or opposite of what it meant
Example: A fire station burns down
Oxymoron
two opposite words put together
Example: bittersweet
Hyperbole
extreme exaggeration
Example: I’m so hungry I could eat a horse!
Alliteration
repeating the same starting sound/letter in words close together
Example: Sally sold seashells by the seashore
Allusion
a reference to something famous like a book, movie, or history
Example: this place is like the garden of eden
Foreshadowing
hinting to something that will happen later
Example: someone saying “I have a bad feeling about this” before something bad happens
