Ethos
The moral element in dramatic literature
Allusion
A reference to another work of literature, person, or event
Pathos
an element in experience or in artistic representation evoking pity or compassion
Simile
: a figure of speech comparing two unlike things that is often introduced by like or as (as in cheeks like roses) — compare metaphor
Logos
the divine wisdom manifest in the creation, government, and redemption of the world and often identified with the second person of the Trinity

Metaphor

: a figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them (as in drowning in money); broadly : figurative language — compare simile
Personification

: attribution of personal qualities; especially : representation of a thing or abstraction as a person or by the human form
Alliteration
: the repetition of usually initial consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables (as wild and woolly, threatening throngs) —called also head rhyme, initial rhyme
Onomatopoeia

: the naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss)
Hyperbole
Definition:
A hyperbole is a literary device wherein the author uses specific words and phrases that exaggerate and overemphasize the basic crux of the statement in order to produce a grander, more noticeable effect.
Allusion

: an implied or indirect reference especially in literature; also : the use of such references
Anaphora
: repetition of a word or expression at the beginning of successive phrases, clauses, sentences, or verses especially for rhetorical or poetic effect — compare epistrophe
Apposition
a : a grammatical construction in which two usually adjacent nouns having the same referent stand in the same syntactical relation to the rest of a sentence (as the poet and Burns in “a biography of the poet Burns”)
Apostrophe
: the addressing of a usually absent person or a usually personified thing rhetorically
Archetype

: the original pattern or model of which all things of the same type are representations or copies : prototype; also : a perfect example
Indirect characterization
the process by which the personality of a fictitious character is revealed through the character’s speech, actions, appearance, etc.
Direct characterization
the narrator or a character in the story tells us what we need to know about a character
