What is Alliteration?
A string of words beginning with the same consonant sound
Define Ambiguity
The quality of being open to multiple interpretations
What is Aposiopesis?
The speaker or writer breaks off abruptly and leaves the statement incomplete
What is a Colloquialism?
An informal phrase or word that’s unique to a period or region
Define Abstract in literature
A style that is typically complex, discusses intangible qualities, and seldom uses examples to support its points
What does Concrete refer to?
Refers to tangible qualities or characteristics, things we know through our senses
What is Antimetabole?
A phrase is repeated but with the order of words reversed
Define Archetype
A universal pattern, character, or image that repeats across stories and cultures
What is an Allusion?
An implied or indirect reference to a person, event, or thing or to a part of another text
Who is the Protagonist?
A main character or ‘hero’ of a story
What is an Antagonist?
Usually the character who opposes the protagonist
Define Asyndeton
Intentionally eliminates conjunctions in a sentence, yet maintains grammatical accuracy

The choice of words and phrases that an author uses to create a specific effect or tone
What is an Analogy?
Compares similarities between two unrelated things as a way to make a point through the comparison

The deliberate repetition of the first part of the sentence in order to achieve an artistic effect

When a writer or speaker speaks directly to someone who is not present or is dead, or speaks to an inanimate object

A problem or unresolved issue in a story

When a word or phrase is repeated in immediate succession with no intervening words

Provides hints of what may happen later in a story

When the reader knows something that the characters do not
What is Situational irony?
Creates an outcome or situation that is dramatically different from what was expected

Using words to convey a meaning that is opposite to or marked differently from their literal interpretation
