Round character
Highly developed character with many traits
Character
Individuals who participate in the action of a literary work
Flat character
Not highly developed, few traits, know very little about them
Static character
Stays the same through out the story
Dynamic character
One who changes throughout the story
Direct characterization
When the narrator tells exactly what they are lik
Indirect characterization
What others say about them, what the character says, physical appearance, actions
Internal conflict
One that occurs within a character
External conflict
Character in conflict with an outside force; nature, another character, etc.
Plot
Sequence of events in a story
Setting
Time and place of the action
Theme
Underlined message about life or a human nature that the writer shares with the reader, typically not stated directly must be inferred
Allusion
Indirect reference to a famous person, place, or event
Diction
Speakers choice of words Ina. Way of arranging the words into sentences
Foreshadowing
A writers use of hints or clue to suggest events that will occur later in the story
Protagonist
Main character in central conflict
Antagonist
Principle or force in opposition of the protagonist
Tone
Attitude a writer takes to a subject
Foil
Character that provides a striking contrast to another character
First person (POV)
Narrator is a character in the story
Third person omniscient (POV)
All knowing narrator, in minds of all the characters
Third person limited (POV)
Not person in story, only knows what one person knows
Verbal irony
Speaker says one thing but means another
Situational irony
What actually happens is the opposite of what is expected
