Personification
a figure of speech that directly compares two unlike things using like or as.
Simile
a figure of speech that directly compares two unlike things.
Metaphor
the use of words that mimic sounds and appeal to our senses of hearing. They help bring description to life. Brrrrt, Crackle, etc.
Onomatopoeia
an exaggerated statement used to heighten effect or emphasize a point.
Hyperbole
descriptive or figurative language used in literature to create word pictures for the reader by details of sight, sound, taste, touch, smell, or movement.
Imagery
the repetition of vowel sounds in two or more words that do not rhyme. (The black cat scratched the saddle).
Assonance
the repetition of a consonant at the end of two or more words. (hop up the step).
Consonance
the reiteration of words, sounds, phrases.
Repetition
words with identical sounds such as cat, and hat or glare and air.
Rhyme
The implied or suggested meaning attached to a word.
Connotation
The literal, dictionary definition of a word
Denotation
An author’s word choice. Includes vocabulary, appropriateness of words, and vividness of the language; may be formal, informal, or conversational
Diction
A writer speaks or writes of a subject as though it were something else and sustains the comparison for several lines or an entire poem.
Extended Metaphor
Also called atmosphere, it is the feeling evoked in a reader. Often suggested by descriptive details and described in a single word, such as light-hearted, frightening, or despairing.
Mood
the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.
