anaphora
A repetition of words at the beginning of sentences. E.G. (Go big or go home. So many places, so little time.)
allusion
is a casual reference to a historical event or text. E.G. (a real romeo)
alliteration
When several nearby words have the same starting letter and make the same sound. E.G. (curious, cats, climb, cliffs)
repetition
When words are repeated E.G. (hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die)
metaphor
A Metaphor is a figure of speech that makes a non-literal comparison between 2 unlikely things.
E.G. (his heart was broken. You light up my life)
similie
comparing something using like or as, E.G. (grandad is wise like an owl)
rhyme
The repetition of sounds between words. E.G. (Once upon a time, I caught a little rhyme, I set it on the floor, it ran out the door)
personification
giving a non-living thing, human characteristics. E.G. (the clouds cried.)
imagery
Descriptive language that appeals to the senses. E.G. (The sky was as blue as the ocean and the clouds sailed across it like white boats.)
symbolism
Where one thing is meant to represent something else. E.G. (how to colour RED symbolises love)
onomatopoeia
Where sounds are described in words
E.G. (Boom, Pow, Bang, Crash)
positive and negative connotation
A word that evokes the pos/neg emotion. E.G. (positive- antique, negative- scrawny)
assonance
Repeated vowel sounds in words placed near each other, usually on the same or adjacent lines, E.G. ( Johnny went here, there and everywhere)
irony
The use of words to convey a meaning that is opposite of what is said. E.G. (Thanks officer, now that you have my license I can’t drive.)
oxymoron
A phrase made of two or more words that have opposite meanings.
E.G. (Bitter sweet, Pretty ugly.)
