The main character in literature, short story, or novel.
Protagonist
any opposing force for the protagonist–some say the “bad guy” of the story
antagonist
conflict within a character
internal conflict
conflict that occurs with an outside force
external conflict
the author makes explicit remarks about a character- no inferences needed
direct characterization
the reader is forced to make an inference about a character based on his thoughts, feelings, actions, words, and comments made by other characters or the narrator
indirect characterization
a character that is not fully developed within the story; one dimensional
flat character
a character that is fully developed throughout the story; multi -dimensional
round character
a stereotypical character- the jock;the nerd;the recluse;the cheerleader; the rude and sarcastic
stock character
a character whose main purpose is to highlight the strengths of another character
foil character
a character who changes and evolves throughout the story through various experiences
dynamic character
a character who does not evolve or change by the end of the story
static character
a character’s reason or incentive for behaving in a certain way; that which impels a character to act
motivation
the introduction of a story where background information is given to ensure understanding
exposition
events leading to the climax of the story–highest point of interest
rising action
the highest point of interest–or action–within the story
climax
events leading to the resolution
falling action
the moment in a story where all problems are solved and the reader receives closure
resolution/denouement
