What is the Author’s Purpose?
Author’s purpose is the reason why the author is writing.
ex- persuade, inform, explain, or entertain
What is a Rhetorical Device?
Figurative language such as repetition or parallelism to effect an audience.
Repetition- repeated sound or word
Parallelism- pattern of words
What is a symbol?
an object person or place stands for something else/represents ideas.
What is the Theme?
The underlying message the author wants the reader to understand.
What’s an Inference?
Prediction in the story; logical assumption
What’s Parallelism?
a pattern of words correspond in grammatical structure sound meaning etc.
What’s Repetition?
A repeating sound or word, that has already been said or written.
What does Text Structure mean?
an arrangement of the story.
- sequence of events
- description
- time order/ chronology.
What is a Simile?
a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another.
ex-He is a busy bee
What does Supporting textual evidence mean?
demonstrates you have read and understand the text, and its a sentence/quoting from the text to use in a answer for a question.
Whats a Metaphor?
a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action.
ex- it’s Raining cats and dogs.
What is the Claim of a story?
in an argument, a claim is the writer’s position on an issue or problem.
What is the Point of view of the story?
point of view refers to the method of narration used in a short story, novel etc.
What does mood of the story mean?
Mood is the feeling or atmosphere that a writer creates for the reader. descriptive words, imagernary, and figurative language contribute to the mood of a word, as do the sound and rhythm of the language used.
What’s Foreshadowing?
A writer’s use of hints or clues to suggest events that will occur later in a story. The hints and clues might be included in a characters dialogue or behavior, or they might be included in details of description.
What’s an Extended Metaphor?
an extended metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two essentially unlike things at some length and in several ways. It does not contain the words like or as.
What is the pace of the story?
Pacing refers to how fast or slow the story is moving for the reader. This is determined by the length of a scene and the speed at which you, the writer, distribute information.
Whats Irony?
It’s a special kind of contrast between appearance and reality- usually one in which reality is the opposite of what it seems.
ex:
Dramatic Irony-in which the reader or viewer knows something that a character does not know.
What’s Foreshadowing?
Foreshadowing is an advance sign or warning of what is to come in the future.
whats is the Mood of a story?
- Mood is the atmosphere of the narrative.
- Mood is created by means of setting, attitude, and descriptions.
What does Pace of a story mean?
pace, or pacing is the speed at which a story is told.
Verbal Irony
Verbal Irony-Verbal irony occurs when a speaker’s intention is the opposite of what he or she is saying. ex, (a character stepping out into a hurricane) “What nice weather we’re having!”
Situational Irony
Situational irony takes place when the opposite of what is expected actually happens.
Ex- A fire station burning down, or someone posting on Twitter that social media is a waste of time
what is a Rhetorical Question?
a question asked in order to create a dramatic effect or to make a point rather than to get an answer.
