Makes it clear to the men that as a man, you are only responsible for yourself
Demonstrates to the audience the dangers of capitalist beliefs
”- and his family too” he almost forgets. He realises his intrusive thoughts are in the company of family and so add it to save his reputation

Half-repetition of ‘himself’ suggests emphasis on his true beliefs
The semi modal verb “has to” suggests its an obligation - there is no debate
