Figure of speech where an object person or situation has another meaning other then it’s literal meaning
Symbol
Device identified by the repeated sound of the first letter in a series of multiple words
Alliteration
Often appears at the beginning of a story or a chapter and helps the reader develop expectations about the coming events in the story
Foreshadowing
Includes the historical moment in time and geographic location in which the story takes place
Setting
A poem of mourning
Elegy
A short piece of nonfiction prose in which the writer discusses some aspect of a subject
Essay
A Medolic poem that expresses the observations and feelings of a single speaker
Lyric poem
A story or a tale with two or more levels of meaning
Allegory
A reference to a well-known person place event literary work or work of art

Aphorism
A technique in which the normal order of words is reversed in order to achieve a particular effect of emphasis or meter

Extended metaphor
A figure of speech in which a theme an idea or an animal is giving human abilities
Personification
