Living And Non Living Flashcards

(6 cards)

1
Q

What is the study of biology?

A

The study of living things is known as biology. The name ‘biology’ is derived from the roots ‘bio,’ which means life, and ‘ology,’ which means the study of. Biology studies all living organisms, which include those we can see and those that are too small to see with the naked eye.

Q

Differentiate between non-living, alive and dead

A

A living thing is something that is currently alive and needs food, air and water to stay alive. Something that is dead was once living but is no longer alive. A non-living thing is something that has never been alive.

Q

Define each of the 7 characteristics of living things (MR GREN)

A

M: Movement: Movement is the ability of an organism to move its body (or part of it) to a
different place

R: Respiration:Respiration is the chemical process that makes energy inside cells.
Glucose + Oxygen - Carbon dioxide + Water+ Energy

G: Growth: The increase in mass in size of a body or organs.

R:Reproduction: a biological process by which an organism reproduces an offspring that is biologically similar to the organism

E:Excretion: the process of removing wastes and excess water from the body

N:Nutrition: the process of taking in food and converting it into energy and other vital nutrients required for life

S: Sensitivity:Living things have the ability to sense their surroundings and respond to
changes. For example, a plant growing towards the light

Q

Compare and contrast animals and plants in terms of their 7 life processes

A

Movement All living things move. Plants move very slowly. They turn their leaves to the light. Animals move from one place to another.

Respiration Respiration helps them get energy from food. Glucose + Oxygen -Energy + Carbon dioxide + Water for animals
and
Carbon dioxide +water- glucose (energy)+oxygen for plants

Growth All plants and animals grow.

Reproduction Plants and animals reproduce. They produce new plants and animals to replace themselves before they die.

Excretion Plants and animals produce waste. Excretion means removing waste from the body.

Movement All living things move. Plants move very slowly. They turn their leaves to the light. Animals move from one place to another.

Sensitivity Both animals and plants are sensitive to their environment.

Q

Define sexual and asexual reproduction

A

During asexual reproduction, a single parent produces offspring. The offspring have the same genes, and therefore the same inherited traits, as the parent. During sexual reproduction, two parents produce offspring. The offspring have a mix of genes from both parents.

Q

Give the word equation for cellular respiration and photosynthesis

A

Respiration: glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy

Photosynthesis: carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen
