An area/ region in the UK which has experienced economic growth and or decline
Locate the case study
Salford is located to the west of the city of Manchester in the heart Northern England. Population of around 200,000 people.
Early economic growth
Manchester was a centre for the processing of cotton during the industrial revolution. The Manchester ship canal opened in 1894 which linked it to the River Mersey and the Irish Sea. A massive complex of inland docks was built at the head of the canal (Salford Quays)
Economic decline
In the 1960s and 70s the new container ships were too wide for the canal, the area plunged into decline. 3000 people lost their jobs, docks closed in 1982. Land was derelict, high rates of crime + unemployment.
Redevelopment and economic growth
Salford Quays recieved funding from the UK’s urban programme, Salford Quays Development plan launched in 1985.
2000- Lowry Building, cost of £64 million. Houses a theatre, galleries, cafes, and bars.
2007- BBC moved several departments to Media City UK development on pier 9. Cost of £550 million, created 10,000 jobs and added £1billion to regional economy by 2013.
Future
Salford City council aims to establish Salford as a modern global city by 2025. Further improvements planned in transport eg improved cycle paths.
