International agreements -
1973 - convention on international trade in endangered species (cites) - prevents trade of rare plants and animals (although this still occurs)
2006 - international tropical timber agreement - restricts trade of tropical hardwood - trees have to be marked with a registration number - buyers can see it was sustainably sourced
fsc (forest stewardship council) - encourages sustainable forestry and manufacturers snd consumers to buy sustainable hardwood - labelled with fsc
Debt reduction
debt for nature swaps - developing countries that are in debt to hics - convert money owed into investments into the rainforests - Brazil and USA - £13.5 million converted into protection of large areas of the Amazon
education and conservation
non government organisations (charities) - write education programmes, train conservation workers, set up conservation schemes, may buy threatened land to turn into nature reserves
