Is responsible for successful delivery of project

Plan the project (produce a project management plan (PMP)) showing how the projects outputs will be delivered.
Produce plan for managing stakeholders.
Ensure adequate project controls are in place.
Prepare for stage gate decisions.

Monitor project progress and make control decisions when necessary
Monitor the projects external environment and business risks
Keep executive stakeholders informed and engaged.

PM
Plan delivery stages in detail, and delegate works to teams via work packages (using WBS)
Manage risks, issues and change requests - assess before escalating to sponsor (only escalate when change is near or out of tolerance)
Report project progress to sponsor (allows prompt action to be taken when required)
Motivate and support the team (through communications, effective plans, timely advice and prompt decisions)

Disband the project team and dispose of project assets.
