Why are individuals who have a learning disability more at risk of abuse?
-They may not know or understand their rights or may want to please others.

-They may not recognise that abuse is happening, may have difficulty remembering and communicating their experiences to others.

-They may not be able to tell others what is happening and they may have depend on others to make decisions on their behalf
Why are individuals who have a sensory impairment more at risk of abuse?
-They may have limited experience of personal relationships and may depend on other to meet their intimate care needs and are therefore less likely to report abuse
Why are individuals who have physical disabilities more at risk of abuse?
-They may have to depend on others and therefore may feel powerless to prevent abuse from happening
Why are looked after children more at risk of abuse?
-They may have had poor life experiences may move in and out of different settings and are unlikely to form trusting relationships with adults therefore less likely to report abuse
What are the factors that may make abuse more likely?
- Care services with institutional
practices - Adults and children residing in health and social care settings
- Health services
- Independent living facilities
- Homelessness
Why are individuals in care services with institutional practices more susceptible to abuse?
- These environments can have rigid routines and intrusive practices that don’t respect an individual’s privacy.
- This makes it difficult for individuals and those that work in these environments to speak up about these institutional practices
Why are individuals in care services with institutional practices more susceptible to abuse?
- Adults and children in these settings often perceive these areas as being safe.
- Those working there are in positions of trust and power

Why are individuals in health services more susceptible to abuse?
- Health services are often visited by individuals with a wide range of needs
- Practitioners are in positions of trust and power
- Often under a lot of pressure, inability for staff members to carry out their responsibilities safely
Why are individuals in independent living facilities more susceptible to abuse?
These facilities are not always staffed and those who live there may become targeted by others living there
Why are individuals that are homeless more susceptible to abuse?
Being homeless often means that individuals are isolated and don’t have contact with family, they don’t have phones etc
less likely to report abuse and therefore, more suseptible to abuse
What are other factors that may make abuse more likely?
- Situations where people are dependent on others
- Relationships where there is an imbalance of power
- Social Isolation
- Situations where there is an invasion of privacy
- Staffing issues
