The Medicines Act
1968
Controls use of human and veterinary medicine use, including manfacture and supply in UK
Veterinary Medicines Regulations
2024
Set out rules by which veterinary medicines are regulated including the; development, production, marketing or distribution of veterinary medicine
The Misuse of Drugs Act
1971
Sets out the classification of drugs (A-C)
– these are drugs not used for therapeutic use, but often abused or used recreationally
Misuse of Drugs Regulations
2001
Allows for the lawful possession and supply of controlled (illegal) drugs for legitimate purposes.
They cover; prescribing, administering, safe custody, dispensing, record keeping, destruction and disposal of controlled drugs to prevent diversion for misuse
Health and Safety at Work Act
1974
Employers must protect the ‘health, safety and welfare’ at work of all their employees, as well as others on their premises.
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH)
2002
Requires employers to control substances that are hazardous to health and includes nanomaterials.

Certain medicines for small pet animals (mut be pets) are exempt from the marketing authorisation requirements of the VMR
