Localisation of Function Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is the theory of Localisation of Function?
Specific functions have specific locations within the brain
State the Cortex’s involved in the Localisation of Function study.
- Somatosensory cortex
- Motor cortex
State the Centres involved in the Localisation of Function study.
- Visual centres
- Auditory centres
State the role of Somatosensory cortex
- Detects sensory events (touch)
State the location of the Somatosensory cortex
- Located in parietal lobe, along post central gyrus region
- Both hemispheres of brain have it
State the role of Motor cortex
- Responsible for the production of voluntary motor movements
State the location of the Motor cortex
- Located at prefrontal gyrus (back of frontal lobe)
- Both hemispheres have it
State the role of Visual Centre
- Processes different type of information involved with vision (colours, shape etc…)
State the location of the Visual Centre
- Located in the occiptical lobe
- Spans both hemispheres
State the role of Auditory Centre
- Concerned with hearing
- Analyses speech-based information
State the location of the Auditory Centre
- Lies within the temporal lobe on both sides of brain
What are the language centres involved in the Localisation of Function study.
- Broca’s area
- Wernicke’s area
State the role of Broca’s area
- Speech production
State the location of Broca’s area
- Left frontal lobe
State the role of Wernicke’s area
- Involved in understanding language
State the location of Wernicke’s area
- Located in posterior portion of temporal lobe
State what happens if Broca’s area was damaged
- Leads to Broca’s aphasia
- Unable to communicate
State what happens if Wernicke’s area was damaged
- Leads to Wernicke’s aphasia
- Cannot comprehend language
