Localisation Of Function Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is ‘Localization of Function’?
- The theory that different areas of the brain re responsible for specific processes, behaviors or actions.
What are the 6 areas on the specification?
- Motor Cortex
- Visual Cortex
- Auditory Cortex
- Somatosensory Cortex
- Wernicke’s Area
- Broca’s Area
What are the 4 lobes of the specification?
- Frontal Lobes
- Temporal Lobes
- Occipital Lobe
- Parietal Lobe
What is the role of the Motor Cortex and where is it located?
- Back of Frontal Lobes.
- Responsible for Voluntary movement in the Contralateral side of the body.
What is the role of the Somatosensory Cortex and where is it located?
- Front of the Parietal.
- Processes sensory information.
What is the role of the Visual Cortex and where is it located?
- Occipital Lobe.
- Receives and process visual information.
What is the role of the Auditory Cortex and where is it located?
- Temporal Lobe
- Analyze speech-based information
What is the role of the Wernicke’s area and where is it located?
- Left Temporal Lobe.
- Responsible for language comprehension.
What is the role of the Broca’s area and where is it located?
- Small area of the Frontal Lobe
- Responsible for Speech information
What happens if the Motor Cortex is damaged?
- Loss of fine movements in the contralateral side of the body.
What happens if the Somatosensory .Cortex is damaged?
- Loss of senses.
What happens if the Auditory Cortex is damaged?
- Partial hearing loss.
What happens if the Visual Cortex is damaged?
- Loss of specific areas of the visual field.
What happens if the Broca’s area is damaged?
- People have slow speech that lacks fluency.
What happens if the Wernicke’s area is damaged?
- People produce nonsense words - they can speak fluently, but the words are meaningless to them.
What does ‘Contralateral’ mean?
- The opposite side of the body to the brain hemisphere that controls it.
