Localisation of Function Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is localisation?
The theory that specific areas of the brain are associated with particular physical and physiological functions
What is the holistic theory?
All parts are equally and simultaneously involved in processing thoughts and actions
The brain is divided into 2 ————-.
symmetrical hemispheres
What is the motor cortex?
Controls planning, voluntary movement
On either hemisphere
What is Broca’s area?
Speech production
What is the auditory cortex?
Analysing and processing acoustic info
On either hemisphere
What is the somatosensory cortex?
Sensory information from touch receptors
On either hemisphere
What is the visual cortex?
Receives and processes visual info
On either hemisphere
What is Wernicke’s area?
Understanding speech
What does the frontal lobe control?
Cognition, planning, problem-solving, personality
What does the Temporal lobe control?
Auditory processing, long-term memory
What are the 6 parts of the cerebral cortex?
- Frontal lobe
- Temporal lobe
- Parietal lobe
- Occipital lobe
- Cerebellum
- Brain stem
What does the Parietal lobe control?
senses - pain, touch
What does the Occipital lobe control?
visual processing, dreams
What does the cerebellum control?
balance, co-ordination
What does the brain stem control?
Communication with the rest of the body - nervous system
In which lobe is Broca’s area in?
Frontal lobe
In which lobe is Wernicke’s area in?
Temporal lobe
In which lobe is the motor cortext located?
Frontal lobe
In which lobe is the auditory cortex located?
Temporal lobe
In which lobe is the somatosensory cortex located?
Parietal lobe
