What is localism?
A response to globalisation with the aim of increasing local sustainability
What are the pressures and concerns which lead to localism?
-More global consumers.
-Increasing consumption.
-Cheaper foods/goods transported long distances as part of trade.
-Concern about global eco-footprint.
-Environmental issues in producing areas.
What are the benefits of localism?
-Saves energy use.
-Reduces size of eco-footprint.
-Encourages eco-friendly farming and other production methods.
-Provides alternatives for local people.
-Improves social and cultural interchange and cooperation.
-Keeps money within the local area.
-Self-sufficient at local/regional/national scales in achievable.
What are the costs of localism?
-Emissions from long-distance transport are often offset by more efficient production methods.
-Local products may be of lower quality than available elsewhere.
-Limited choice for local consumers.
-Shortages of products may be of lower quality than available elsewhere.
-Local market may be unreliable so local businesses not sustained.
-Prices of local products may be higher.
-Limited interaction with non-local markets reduces opportunities outside the area.
