Localization Flashcards

1
Q

What is localization?

A

Localization of function is the theory that certain parts of the brain correspond to certain functions and reflects the idea that behaviour, emotion and/or thoughts originate in specific regions of the brain.

Q

Testability

A

Fairly testable theory. However, the theory can pose a problem in terms of assessing only one function in relation to a certain part of the brain(Lashley)> However, brain imaging technology can help us form a clearer picture of the brain and is used for modern day studies into localization.

Q

Empirical support

A

Broca, Maguire and Sharot et al(200), all demonstrated that a certain function is localised to a certain part of the brain- supporting at least some degree of localization. Additionally studies supporting localization, specifically Maguire, can be easily replicated.

Q

Application

A

Localization can help people understand where and what is being affected and lead to development of possible treatment for various ailments(Lashley –> dementia??)

Q

Clearly defined variables

A

Localization is a fairly clear theory and the IV and DV often occur in real life.

Q

Unbiased

A

Most studies concerning localization are androcentric and ethnocentric. Western Industrialized Educated Rich Democratic. This focus on male and Western participants makes it difficult to support or oppose a theory.

Q

Predicts behaviour

A

Localization can predict what may happen if a certain part of the brain is affected and vice-versa.

Q

Equipotentiality

A

Alternate theory, developed by Lashley. Different regions of the cerebral cortex are equally involved in performing specific functions and have the capacity to take over functions from other regions that are damaged.
