What is regeneration?
The process of urban improvement for an economic, social or environmental benefit.
Reasons for regeneration?
Area was in decline, containarisation so fewer docks were needed, access to rest of London was limited, area was not generating enough money.
Successes of the regeneration?
Trade increased, rent for businesses was low, 22k new housing units built, access to rest of London improved, provision of 170k jobs and £50 billion to UK annual economy.
Losses of the regeneration?
Increased social segregation and economic inequality between former dock workers and the new workforce of the regenerated dockland.
Why was this a conservative regeneration?
It happened between 1979 and 1997 during the Conservative Party.
Regenerated the inner city with fundraising from the government where marketing was used to attract private investment in the area.
