Long Term Memory Types Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
3 types of long term memory
A
Episodic
Procedural
Semantic
2
Q
Define explicit and implicit memories
A
Explicit - declarative
- memories including knowledge of events and facts
Implicit - non-declarative
- memories of skilled behaviours, largely unconscious
3
Q
Episodic memories
A
- explicit
- personal experiences e.g. first day at school
- strength of the memory is determined by the strength of the emotions experienced when the memory is coded
- conscious
- associated with the hypo-campus
4
Q
Semantic memories
A
- explicit
- knowledge of facts, concepts about the world e.g. London is a capital
- associated with the temporal lobe
- stronger than episodic
5
Q
Procedural memories
A
- implicit
- how to perform certain tasks, actions, skills e.g. riding a bike
- hard to explain to someone else
- associated with the cerebellum + motor cortex
6
Q
Evaluate the LTM
A
- brain scans support LTM - shows that different parts of the brain are active when accessing episodic, semantic and procedural M.
->supports the idea that LTM made up of three catagories - support for implicit and explicit LTM - patient HM had his hippocampus removed
-> able to learn procedural tasks but not Semantic or episodic info (do Mirror tracing but couldn’t recall previously doing the task - socially sensitive - HM’s identity hidden
