Define explicit and implicit memories

A

Explicit - declarative
- memories including knowledge of events and facts

Implicit - non-declarative
- memories of skilled behaviours, largely unconscious

Episodic memories

  • personal experiences e.g. first day at school
  • strength of the memory is determined by the strength of the emotions experienced when the memory is coded
  • conscious
  • associated with the hypo-campus

A
  • explicit
  • knowledge of facts, concepts about the world e.g. London is a capital
  • associated with the temporal lobe
  • stronger than episodic

Evaluate the LTM

A
  • brain scans support LTM - shows that different parts of the brain are active when accessing episodic, semantic and procedural M.
    ->supports the idea that LTM made up of three catagories
  • support for implicit and explicit LTM - patient HM had his hippocampus removed
    -> able to learn procedural tasks but not Semantic or episodic info (do Mirror tracing but couldn’t recall previously doing the task
  • socially sensitive - HM’s identity hidden
