Longitudinal Waves Flashcards
(8 cards)
Longitudinal motion
Oscillations are parallel to wave direction
Speed of sound in solid
c= root( Y/ roe) youngs modulus and density
Solid types of waves
Can have both longitudinal and transverse, shear force exists between adjacent planes so transverse motion can occur
Liquid and gas wave types
No shear force so only longitudinal
Liquid c
Bulk modulus K, c= root(K/roe)
Gas speed
Bulk modulus K_T = p and K_S= gamma p
Use K_S because fats oscillations c= root(gammap/roe)
Wavefronts
Equally spaced, surface of constant phase
Plane or circular, 3D= spherical
Doppler effect for sound
Moving source f’= f/ 1+ v/c positive is away negative is towards
Moving observer f’ = (1+ v/c)f positive is towards negative is away
