What is hypothesis testing and what is it’s components?
- A hypothesis is a statement about the value of a population parameter developed for the purpose of testing a theory or belief.
- Hypothesis testing procedures, based on sample statistics and probability theory, are used to determine whether a hypothesis is a reasonable statement and should not be rejected, or if it is an unreasonable statement and should be rejected.
- Components: State hypothesis, select appropriate test statistic, specify level of significance, state the decision rule, collect sample and calculate sample statistics, make a decision regarding hypothesis, make decision based on test rsults
What is the Null Hypothesis (H0)
It is the hypothesis that the researcher wants to reject - It’s the one that’s tested e.g. The null hypothesis is that the mean is equal to a certain number
Two tailed = equal to a certain value (can reject if it’s greater or less than)
one trailed = if we say greater than or equal to / less than or equal to (can reject if it’s greater / less)
What is the alternative hypothesis
The alternative hypothesis is what is concluded if there is sufficent evidence to reject the null hypothesis, and is usually what you’re trying to assess.
e.g. the population mean is not equal to a certain number
