Bereavement
The state of grieving from loss of loved one
Mourning
An outward sign of someone’s grief
Usually greatly influenced by ones culture, religion, and values

1) irreversible cessation of all functions of circulatory and respiratory function
2) irreversible cessation of all function of entire brain including brain stem
Medical criteria used to clarify death
Cessation of breathing, no response to deep painful stimuli, lack of reflexes and spontaneous movement
Components of good death

Palliative care
Aims to relieve suffering and improve quality of life for patients with advanced illness and their families
Grief
The internal emotional reaction to loss or normal appropriate emotional response to loss.

Hospice
Care provided for people with limited life expectancy
Advance directive
Allows people to state their choices for health care would be should certain circumstances develop
Physician order for life sustaining treatment form ( POLST)
Medical order indicating a patients wishes regarding treatment commonly used in medical crisis
Must be completed by health care professional
DNR
No attempts are to be taken to resuscitate
AND
Allow natural death- same at DNR just stated in a positive way
Terminal weaning
Withdrawal of mechanical ventilation
