Key ideas about the conch
The conch was the start and end of civilisation it was used to hold meetings and to control and have order to the group when the conch was destroyed civilisation was destroyed along with us. The colour of the conch is a symbol toward how they are ultimately leading towards savagery “the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exsist”
Glasses key ideas
They were a symbol of intelligence and order as they showed how piggy was the smartest of them and that whenever he was there was order and civilisation they also strayed the fire which could show the necessity of the knowledge to the boys
Civilisation vs barbarity
All the boys clung on to their old school life by making rules and raising hands but overall as the book develop the boys start to forget these rules and their clothes is a sign of this as they lose their clothes showing what it’s like
Jacks hunting is also the start of the loss of civilisation you could argue that jack is the founder of this inner evil like Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden boys follow their natural primitive instincts
Power and leadership key ideas
Power changes throughout the novel when they boys land they have a fair democracy with rules and leaders this sticks with Ralph’s tribe but when jack makes his own he has a tribe of more of a dictatorship style as he orders them around. Jacks leadership is also irresponsible as he craves power but doesn’t want the responsibility that comes with it
Nature key ideas
Nature isn’t always friendly as at the beginning Ralph and piggy have already been attached and tangled in bushes. The only person the really goes well with nature is Simon
