LOTF Flashcards
(10 cards)
How does Golding present ideas about leadership/power/democracy?
ses characters, symbols and the plot to explore ideas about leadership and how the boys on the island can be seen as a microcosm for society during WW2
What is first suggested as a form of voting?
“hands up like at school” - child-like and carried out from their familiarity of school
What are the reasons for why the boys choose a leader?
jack - “I can sing C sharp”
ralph - “the one with the shell”
- shows how people vote without knowledge of politics and how people are in power with the wrong motives/meanings - e.g. in WW2 where they advocated the war
What shows that weaker elements of society are relient on democratic freedom and equality?
“I got the conch!”
“let me speak!”
- could be exploiting flaws in democracy - permission from higher authority before allowance to speak - eg soldiers sent out to fight despite the disapproval of general public
Which quote shows how Jack exploits fear to establish control over the children?
derogatory language: “cry-babies” and “sissies”
then promises to “look for the snake” juxtaposes his earlier claims
- could be Golding criticising media and politicians and how easily news altered opinions
What does Jack say that shows he is making up his own rules in a dictatorship style?
“the conch doesn’t count at this end of the island” - distancing himself from the democratic system ralph made
What is the conch described as?
“something creamy”
“interesting and pretty”
- initial appeal to democracy similar to that at home
What quotation symvolises the end of civilisation/democracy?
the conch “exploded into a thousand tiny white fragments and ceased to exist”
what shows Jack’s self-destructive society?
stick “sharpened at both ends”
What was waiting to pick up the boys?
“trim cruiser in the distance” - picked up by naval officer shows irony as they go home to another war
