What does the conch represent?
Democracy and civilisation
The conch is fragile- just like democracy
What dos the fire represent?
Knowledge, progress, civilisation
Destruction, conflict and power
What does Piggy’s glasses represent?
A benevolent society, knowledge, progress, civilisation
Power, destruction, conflict
What does the school uniform represent?
Civilisation and normalcy
What do the creepers, the Beast and darkness represent?
Fear
Man’s ability to do evil
What does the island represent?
Paradise
Compare to Garden of Eden
Perfect until humanity came onto it and destroyed it
What does Simon represent?
A prophet, or Jesus
Feeding of the little uns in chapter 3- feeding of the 5000
Simon parallels Moses when he receives the revelation on top of the mountain- of what the parachutist actually was. He then descends the mountain to see the boys worshipping a Pagan God- Baal/ Beast
What does Piggy represent?
He represents a super ego
Relies heavily on society and its rules
After losing his specs, he is both literally and metaphorically blind
What does Sam and Eric represent?
A general representation of the public who want to be good but have their limits as well
They become one- the further they go past their limit, the more they form into one person
What does Jack and Roger represent?
Id. They aren’t bound by rules, and they do what they want
Often bad (as seen as with the choir boys when they no longer follow the democracy)
Jack only follows rules for benefits and pride- he likes it when he benefits off of them (e.g. not happy when he’s not voted as leader, etc.)
