Tell me about a time when you had to dig into a problem to discover the root cause. What was the issue, and how did you approach it?
Tell me about a time where you had to dive deep on a problem.
📌 SITUATION:
While working at Magnet Forensics, I was responsible for migrating REST APIs from Clojure to .NET as part of a broader system refactor. During testing, we noticed that some endpoints were returning incorrect data under specific conditions.
📌 TASK:
My task was to identify the root cause of these inconsistent responses, which were impacting critical user functionality.
📌 ACTION:
I began by isolating the failing test cases and logging the HTTP responses in both the legacy and new systems. I traced the issue to a subtle difference in how the original Clojure code handled null database fields. Then I dove deeper into the data layer and found that the .NET ORM was misinterpreting certain optional fields. I wrote targeted unit tests to replicate the behavior and used mock datasets to validate the fix across multiple scenarios. I also worked with QA to update the regression test suite.
📌 RESULT:
This deep-dive approach allowed me to pinpoint and resolve the discrepancy, which eliminated a class of bugs affecting several endpoints. As a result, API accuracy improved and the migration progressed on schedule. The QA team later reported a 30% drop in bug reports for the affected module.
