  • most vulnerable period (teratogens, prepare for pregnancy)

  • less vulnerable and external structure present
  • from now on a process of maturing, refining, and perfecting

A
  • 1-4 weeks
  • implantation
  • germ layers develop
  • heart prominent and begins to pulsate (2 chambered)
  • arm and leg buds
  • brain visible

2nd Lunar Month

A
  • 5-8 weeks
  • Organogenesis complete by week 8.
  • heart formed (fetal circulation established)
  • face develops (and palate)
  • limbs recognized
  • largest organ: brain (growing very rapidly)

A
  • 9-12 weeks
  • End of 1st trimester
  • ossification of bones, eyelids now fused
  • head 1/3-1/2
  • begin to note sex by week 12 (gen. know at 16-18-20ish wks)
  • FHT w/ doppler
  • Kidney secrete urine by wk 9-10
  • spontaneous movements are noted

A
  • 13-16 weeks
  • Lanugo on head, blood vessels visible , thin skin
  • Quickening (active muscle movement) (usually mistaken for gas)
  • 6-7 in.
  • GI development (sucking motions, swallows am. fluid, mec. present, GI secretions)
  • FHT with fetoscope

  • 17-20 weeks
  • Prominent lanugo
  • brown fat deposits (skin less thin and transparent)
  • Vernix Caseosa
  • Nails
  • Regular Habits (sleep, suck, kick) (when most report quickening)
  • 10 in.

A
  • 21-24 weeks
  • End of 2nd trimester (miscarriage or stillbirth)
  • Fetal respiratory movements (take in am. fluid so crackles not abnorm.)
  • substantial wt. gain
  • increasing activity
  • VIABILITY

  • 25-28 weeks
  • Surfactant production open alveoli after birth (crucial for lungs to inflate)
  • Eyelids open
  • Testes descend
  • Resp. and circ. system sufficiently developed.

  • 29-39 weeks
  • SQ fat deposits
  • Mineral storage in bones (Iron and Ca)
  • Can be conditioned to respond to sounds outside mom’s body

  • body is rounded and plump (mom and baby)
  • Lanugo disappears
