lungs and circulatory system Flashcards
(10 cards)
Name the tubes that split off the trachea
bronchus and bronchiole
explain the role that alveoli play in gas exchange
The alveoli are tiny air pockets, which have elastic walls consisting a single, thin cell layer or epithelium which makes gaseous exchange possible.Supported by these adaptations, alveoli carries a major role in the exhange of gases, allowing carbon dioxide to diffuse out and oxygen to diffuse into the blood
why is the circulatory system called double in humans
The majority of mammals (including humans) utilize a double circulatory system. This means that we have two loops in our body in which blood circulates. One is oxygenated, meaning oxygen rich, and the other is deoxygenated, which means it has little to no oxygen, but a lot of carbon dioxide
why does the heart have valves
The heart has 4 valves: The mitral valve and tricuspid valve, which control blood flow from the atria to the ventricles. The aortic valve and pulmonary valve, which control blood flow out of the ventricles.
name the four chambers of the heart
right atrium, left atrium, left ventricle, right ventricle
How is the resting heart rate controlled in a healthy heart
by the pace maker
why do red blood cells not have a nucleus
to have more space for holding oxygen
how are arteries adapted to carry blood away from the heart
Blood is pumped at high pressure away from the heart in arteries. It travels through networks of thin capillaries, where it can exchange materials with the tissues. It’s then collected up and returned to the heart at low pressure in veins.
what is tissue
any of the distinct types of material of which animals or plants are made, consisting of specialized cells and their products.
what is meant by a organ system
an organ system is a group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions. Each does a particular job in the body, and is made up of certain tissues.
