Q

Pages 114-115 lays out basic differences between the Catholic and Protestant faiths. Summarize these differences, paying special attention to the factors that Luther preached most ardently.

A

Catholic: God is foremost a judge to e feared; good works are sought as a recommendation to God.
Protestant: God is a loving Savior who forgives gratuitously, meeting the sinner where he is and bearing his load. Moreover, Luther fiercely defended the right of the individual to be his own interpreter of Scripture.

Q

How did Luther’s socio-economic background and geographic location benefit his efforts to reform the church?

A

He was able to connect well with the greatest mass of people. His homely manner of speaking and writing served him with a great advantage. In addition, he came from a part of Germany that was “the most German” of all the districts, and it belonged to no other section. The Reformation also coincided with a larger period of social unrest among the peasantry.
