Lymphatic System Flashcards
To learn about the Lymphatic System (17 cards)
What is the function of the Lymphatic System?
To transport lymph fluid throughout the body.
What is the second function of the Lymphatic System?
To collect fluid that leaks from blood vessels and return it to the circulatory system.
Without this system, what other system would lose its effectiveness?
The Circulatory System.
What is Edema?
A swelling condition.
What are Lymph Vessels?
They are located throughout the body and return excess fluid to circulation.
What are Lymph Ducts?
They collect lymph and return it to circulation. These ducts are located in the superior vena cava.
What are Lymph Nodes?
Bean-shaped nodes that are located throughout the body.
What is the Thymus?
It is located beneath the sternum. It is where T-cells mature.
What is the Spleen?
It is located in the Abdominal cavity. It cleanses blood and removes damaged blood cells.
What are Lymphocytes?
They are the second most common type of White Blood Cell.
What is Peripheral Blood?
Blood that runs from the organs to the heart.
How do Lymphocytes perform?
They travel through the blood and routinely leave capillaries and wander through connective tissues.
Where can Lymphocytes be found?
Everywhere
What is epithelial tissue?
Tissue that covers internal organs.
How do lymphocytes re-enter the circulatory system?
They re-enter the circulatory system through the lymphatic system.
What is an Allergic Reaction?
It is when the Immune system creates a large number of IgE antibodies. These antibodies attach to mast cells and are found in airways.
What happens when IgE attacks?
White Blood Cells release Histamine and other chemicals to produce symptoms.
