Lymphatic System Flashcards
(29 cards)
What are the 3 different functions of the lymphatic system?
fluid Balance
protection from infection
absorption of fats
What is intracellular fluid?
fluid that is inside the cell
What is extracellular fluid?
fluid that is outside the cell
Can you name two subtypes of extracellular fluid?
interstitial fluid
intravascular fluid
Can you name the pathway that lymph travels to return from the right fingertips to the venous blood flow?
capillaries -> afferent vessels -> lymph nodes -> efferent vessels -> right lymph duct -> right subcalvin vein
Can you name the pathway that lymph travels to return from the right toes to the venous blood flow?
capillaries -> afferent vessels -> lymph nodes -> efferent vessels -> thoracic lymph duct -> thoracic subcalvin vein
What are the differences between lymphatic capillaries and blood capillaries?
lymphatic capillaries are more permeable than blood capillaries and can pick up fluid and proteins left in the tissues.
What are the similarity between afferent and efferent lymphatic vessels and veins?
They have valves
Lymph capillaries lead to which lymphatic vessel?
Afferent
Lymph nodes are drained by which lymphatic vessel?
efferent
Into what vein does the right lymphatic vessel drain?
Right subcalvin vein
Into what vein does the thoracic duct drain?
thoracic subcalvin vein
What is at the inferior end of the thoracic duct?
Cisterna chyli
What is the function of a lymph node?
lymph filration
immune system activation
What vessels lead to a lymph node?
Afferent
Can you name the lymphatic organs that are not involved in fluid balance?
Spleen
Thymus
Tonsils
Where is the spleen? What is it’s function?
It’s located on the left side of the abdominal cavity beneath the diaphragm. It cleanses blood, destroy old red blood cells, and is a reservoir for blood.
Where is the thymus?
Located in the superior thorax deep to the sternum.
What happens to the thymus as the human grows from childhood to adulthood?
After puberty it shrinks in size and is replaced by connective tissue and fat.
In what two systems does the thymus have a role?
Lymphoid system & immune system development.
Where are the tonsils? what are their names and functions?
Located under mucous membrane in mouth and throat. the names are palatine, pharyngeal (adenoids), and lingual tonsils. They remove contaminants and traps pathogens.
Where is the appendix? What is it function?
Lower right abdominal cavity, it function unknown
What is MALT?
mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue
What is GALT?
Gut-associated lymphoid tissue
